Travel – Taj Mahal – A Love Story Enshrined
Text and Pictures by Karen Neoh
Completed in 1653 A.D., The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the final resting place for his favourite Queen, Mumtaz Mahal, before he was overthrown by his son Aurangzeb in 1658. Construction of the monument took all of 22 years. Imprisoned in a tower of the Red Fort in Agra, his only solace was being able to view the Taj from where he lay incarcerated. Upon his death he was reunited with his queen, resting side by side in the Taj for eternity.
It was a gorgeous day and the sheer magnitude of the monument and its amazing minarets literally took my breath away. The four minarets loom up from each corner of the tomb and were built to lean outwards so that in the event of an earthquake or tremors, they would fall away from the catacomb. Amazing.
